Introducing the next Student Support Specialist at Salem Prep High School

Posted on: September 24, 2021

Hello everyone,

It is my honor to announce to the Prep community our selected candidate to replace Marlin Calderon as the Salem Prep High School, Student Support Specialist. I am beyond excited to welcome Yamily Byas on board. Yamily has many, many accomplishments in her career working in the community of Salem. Yamily was kind enough to write a letter introducing herself to our parent/guardians, students, and staff members. Please take a moment to get to know her by reading, in her own words, her introduction into our school community:

Hello Salem Prep,

I am very excited to work with you all as the Student Support Specialist. I am

ready to work and get to meet you all and have a great and safe school year. I

know things get difficult at times but never give up. I hope I can bring something

new and warm to the school and be of great help to you all.

I am currently working as an administrator/clerk at the Mass Rehab Commission,

I’ve been there for almost 5 years. I have been able to work with great staff and

even better clients and support them in their community. I am leaving with a

heavy heart but with great knowledge and co-workers who have become like

family. I also teach ESL, 2 nights in the evenings in partnership with the House of

the Seven Gables here in Salem, I have been doing this for 7 years and it’s such an

honor. I love teaching ESL. I am also very proud of my small, but

impactful organization I began in 2019 in supporting Latinx moms – Mamas Unidas.

Mamas Unidas supports moms in servicing them with support groups, education,

basic needs such as diapers, wipes, formula, and referrals to other local

organizations or clinics that might better support their needs. I am very proud of

this work I do as founder and my dream is to become a 501c3, we are sponsored

by The Welcome Immigrant Network and Saint Peter’s church. I have also worked

for the Salem Public schools in the past at Bentley as their office manager, I loved

working with kids, teachers, and families.

I love Salem, I have been a resident for 6 years with 1 gap year in between. I have a 3yr old

who is my life, he attends Salem Public schools and everything that I do is in Salem. I love to read, eat, and I am a very hands-on mom. My biggest joy in this world is

being my son’s mother.

Thank you for welcoming me into your school. I hope that I will be a huge support

to you all, students, teachers, and families.

Love,

Yamily Byas
